Get Real Begins
Nothing pisses me off more than when people seem to think that facts are some sort of variable that don’t have a set value. I’ve been a reporter for 22 years and it doesn’t matter whether I’ve covered politics or business or crime, there are always people who seem to believe that if they say something is true, repeat it, get the gullible media to then pick it up, that it will become a fact. Unfortunately they are often correct.
In my reporting I have always tried to correct the record and make sure to set things straight. Facts matter now more than ever. With Get Real I want to call out the people and institutions that play fast and loose with facts. I also want to give shout outs to those who admit when they’ve blown it. I’ll probably have a bit of a New York and national political bias as first in terms of what I cover but I want to hear from you guys about stories where facts are getting the short shrift.
During the Presidential campaign there were plenty of good organizations doing fact-checking on candidates and their claims. Now we need to keep that focus on the leaders in Washington, Albany, New York City and everywhere else.
Let’s get to it.
